    Module 2: Server Configuration

Objectives: The objective of this lab is to configure the server by completing the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials dashboard “Getting Started” tasks.

Overview: This module highlights the ways in which the SBS 2011 Dashboard Getting Started tasks list simplifies the process of finalizing server configuration and enabling important features that would otherwise require more effort and knowledge of Windows technologies. Primarily, the module walks users through initially configuring automatic updates and other SBS 2011 features including updates, server backups, remote access, shared folders, and email notification.

Module 3: Server Management and Monitoring Module 4: User and Client Computer Management

Objectives: The objectives of this lab are to demonstrate how to use the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Dashboard to review and configure server resources and settings, manage server backups, and monitor system health.

Overview: This module shows the benefits the SBS Dashboard offers as a centralized solution for server configuration and monitoring. The module reviews server settings in the SBS 2011 Dashboard. Specifically, in this module, users review detailed configuration settings for domain members, local storage, server backup settings, and time/location. Users also review server health via warnings and alerts.

Objectives: The objectives of this lab are to use the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Dashboard to manage users and clients and to use the SBS 2011 Essentials Connect site to join a computer to the SBS domain.

Overview: This module focuses on client account creation and computer management. Two key benefits are highlighted:

  • SBS provides an easy and centralized way to create users and assign permissions. Once users are created, administrators can easily grant remote access to the SBS dashboard and user workstations.

  • The remote website provides a one-click process to join workstations to the SBS domain and automatically migrate local user profiles and data to the domain profile.

To illustrate these benefits, users create new users, join the domain, and review backup customization. This module also shows users that SBS makes it easy to migrate data from local profiles to domain profiles.

Module 5: Client Experience   Module 6: Cloud Services and Add-ins

Objectives: The objectives of this lab are to use the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Remote Web Workplace to access domain resources from a non-domain computer and to use the SBS 2011 Essentials Launchpad.

Overview: This module walks users through using the client Launchpad and the Remote Web Workplace. The Launchpad increases user productivity by providing easy access to commonly-used domain resources.

The Launchpad is installed when a client computer joins the SBS 2011 domain. Once installed, the Launchpad provides quick links for managing backups, browsing shared folders, and accessing the Remote Web Workplace and the SBS Dashboard.

The Remote Web Workplace keeps users productive while they are away from the office. The Remote Web Workplace is a website that users can log into anytime from any Internet-enabled computer to access domain resources such as email and file shares as well as RDP into workstations.

Objective: In this lab, users will explore how easy it is to install Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials add-ins from client workstations and manage them even when working remotely.

Scenario: Aaron Lee needs to install and configure the Lights-Out add-in to help cut down on power consumption by the SBS Essentials server and clients. He will install the add-in from his workstation and then connect to the Dashboard to complete configuration.
